What is the best way to ventilate dormers?
Here is some information about venting dormers.
In most cases dormers can be considered as small, stand alone roofs. Often dormers have a cathedral ceiling, which means they should be handled similar to ventilating a vaulted cathedral ceiling (install intake vents such as AirVent's The Edge Vent or Vented Drip Edge or Continuous Soffit Vents; install ridge vents for exhaust; ensure there is a minimum 1 1/2-inch airspace between the insulation and the deck). If the house has small false dormers, which are effectively cosmetic and are only open to the attic, the dormers do not need to be vented. However, the use of some intake vents to increase air movement through the attic should not cause any problems. Large false dormers sometimes offer additional lengths of ridge on which ridge vents can be utilized. When they are common to the main attic they can often provide a benefit in airflow. Note, however, the basic rule for ridge heights should there be multiple ridge heights involved: All ridges can be vented whether they run parallel or at angles to each other, however, if the ridges are more than 3 feet apart in height, only ventilate the higher ridge.
